A Collaborative Celebration

                  of Jazz Music

Calling all lovers and students of jazz music, aspiring young musicians and seasoned players alike. Roland Wines is hosting a workshop/jam session event on the first Sunday of each month hosted by the house trio of Brad Dutz on vibraphone, Sean Leach on bass, and Alan Cook on drums/perc. There will be ample opportunity for student led ensembles to perform and present music they have developed together, followed by an open jam session set where players of all skill levels can play and collaborate. We also will be looking at and working through charts of some well-known tunes to focus on interpretation and sight reading proficiency.

The house trio will open the occasion with a set of music written by two of the most renowned and prolific composers within the jazz lexicon, Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. We’ve named our event Come Sunday after the title of one Duke’s most famous compositions, written in 1943 as a feature for his long time alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges and part of the first movement of his suite entitled Black, Brown, and Beige. The trio will be playing that piece along with several other well-known Ellington/Strayhorn compositions.

Following that will be a set featuring any student led ensembles who wish to present music they have been working on, originals and otherwise, after which the open jam session will commence. We are seeking to nurture not only a joyful playing experience for all involved, but also provide an opportunity for players of different levels to reflect on and share their experience in developing their skills as jazz musicians.

This gathering will not only be a celebration of jazz music, but also of the many students studying and playing it and the teachers imparting the love of it in our local schools. All ages are welcome, listeners and players alike, the setting within Roland Wines is warm and inviting, the food and fare delicious.

New To Roland’s? Start here

Marc and Nancy Roland

Marc and Nancy Roland started the winery in 2008 in Longview, Washington. An unlikely location in Southwest Washington known as the planned city of founder, R.A. Long. A mill town in the rough and tumble West where more likely than not, you might find moonshine, not wine. That was before their time, but much has changed since 1923, including a changing economy and a vibrant vision for a more diverse and culturally enriched place to live.

Zak Roland

Zak Roland is the second generation of Roland’s that have embraced the idea of a wine and food culture in our community. He is the architect of the wood-fired pizza idea, bringing authentic Italian pizza to this place.

Family

Roland Wines is family owned and operated. We are bringing up a new generation of artisans who will carry on the tradition of hospitality, quality, and service to the greater Cowlitz County region
